Data Analyst

A bit about the role

The Data & Analytics team is responsible for data collection and modeling. You’ll join this new team, reporting directly to the CTO, and working closely together with business stakeholders and analysts.

You’ll get to work with best-in-class data generating systems that cover the full spectrum of business functions. The core of our stack is built on Snowplow (for objective event data) and Stitch (for aggregated and third party data), writing raw data into Google BigQuery, modelling using dbt, BI via Looker, and distribution of models via Census.

This is a role best suited for someone who thrives as part of a high-functioning team. In addition to collaborating with colleagues in platform engineering, you’ll be working cross-functionally with amazing creative talent, bringing interactive experiences to life.

Indeed, Bleach is probably one of the few places on the planet where the Vetements AW2021 show (which we styled) is discussed at the same table as the Joel Test or the latest developments in pipeline architecture. This, more than anything, speaks to the diverse and credible nature of the team we’re assembling here. Or to put it another way, if this sounds like your dream job, it almost certainly is.

Data collection

We work to manage and optimise the our tools for event data collection (Snowplow) and data extraction (Stitch, direct integrations). Our aim is to build on our robust and scalable data collection stack so that it delivers on all our business requirements and sets our functional teams up for long-term success by making it easy to collect - and action -   high-quality granular data.

Data modeling

We design, implement, document, and maintain a wide range of SQL data models as well as some R and python-based models. These models integrate data from all different sources and generate clean, structured and interpreted data sets that are ready for consumption by the business or by the other data functions.
We run these models on a cloud-native data warehouse (BigQuery) and we use dbt to bring a number of best practices from software engineering to data modeling. We also work closely with some of Europe’s leading Data Scientists to build descriptive and predictive models.

Our models are consumed by Looker (for BI) as well as Census (for distribution to peripheral / functional-specific tooling, e.g. Facebook Audiences)

Technology at Bleach:

In addition to our continuing investment in a best-in-class data stack, you will find the latest in software engineering at Bleach. Our platform is based on a modern JAMstack that ticks all the right boxes. We’re using best-in-class, API-first SaaS products, including Contentful, Shopify Plus and Cloudinary.

Some of the things you’ll be doing:

  • Work in close collaboration with business stakeholders and analysts to design and develop SQL data models that deliver clean, structured and interpreted data to the downstream consumers.
  • Expand and improve the suite of tools that form the foundation of all the work we do.
  • Get to work with an experienced team. Coaching and mentoring is an important part of the road to success for us.
  • Have the opportunity to become an expert on data collection and modeling. You will develop strong opinions, whilst retaining a certain level of pragmatism, and you will have the opportunity to share those opinions by writing blog posts and presenting at conferences.
  • Assist with training the other members of the data team to ensure cross-skilling.

Must have experience:

  • You have strong SQL experience and understand the difference between queries that work and queries that are maintainable and scalable. Some experience with cloud-native data warehouses is preferred (we use BigQuery, but Redshift, and Snowflake are very similar). Experience with other languages, especially with R and Python, is a plus but not a requirement.
  • You have at least 2 years of relevant experience. You won’t know how all the systems work on day one so we don’t expect you to hit the ground running, but a good understanding of the fundamentals and experience working in a similar role will help you get up to speed quickly.
  • You are self-motivated and prefer to learn by doing, failing, and trying again. You have a can-do attitude to learning new skills and new tools. Not only do we have to keep abreast of the state-of-the-art, we also have to adapt sometimes to clients’ toolsets.
  • You are a good communicator who is able to work directly with data analysts, data scientists, engineers, product managers, marketers, and executive teams. Being able to communicate with clarity and precision is of critical importance to this role.
  • You are a clear thinker who is comfortable explaining their thinking, discussing different approaches to a problem, and working collaboratively and creatively to identify new solutions.
  • You care about the details and have a mature attitude to documentation, security, and process—all of which are important and inform everything we do.
  • You might have a STEM degree. You might not. That’s not necessarily what we’re looking for. We care about what you can do and how you do it, not about how you got here. A strong track record of conscientious, thoughtful work speaks volumes.
  • You enjoy working across multiple problems with multiple clients at any given moment. To do this effectively, you understand the importance of planning and estimating and know how to balance competing priorities.
  • This is a remote-friendly job. You’re free to work where you work best: home office, co-working space, coffeeshops. We also have an office in East London, which you can use as often as you like (right up to 5 days a week if that is your preference).

Hello, I’m Bleach London!

The meteoric rise of hair brand Bleach London is best described by Time Out as  “The grungy salon that pioneered the dip-dye, then conquered the globe.” The female-led, boundary-pushing business was launched by Alex Brownsell and Sam Campbell in 2010 as the world’s first salon focused on colour.

With a closely knit family of international premises, ever-expanding vegan product range and intuitive digital salon services, Brownsell and Campbell have reimagined the way people approach their hair. They’re on a mission to make Bleach’s expertise accessible to all, so anyone can express themselves through their hair colour affordably and informatively.

To date, the company has sold over £30million worth of products in the UK alone and is carried in retailers including Boots, Cult Beauty and ASOS. The coveted Bleach brand, regularly featured in Vogue, Dazed, i-D and more, paired with its pioneering approach, marks a new era in digital beauty and at-home hair dyeing.

With a team of dedicated specialists across creative, colour chemistry, styling, retail, marketing, social, digital, data and global operations, Bleach saw a 600% D2C growth in 2020 and is set to continue to expand in 2021. New market launches including the USA will continue to reinforce Bleach’s position as a leader in the £40billion hair colourant category.

We’re a diverse and credible team set to build a business of significant value in the $70B haircare industry, and the Data Engineer is central to delivering on our vision.

The interview process:

  • Stage 1: Let’s get to know each other! This will be an initial 30 mins call with the CTO who will explain to you a bit more about the role and future big plans at Bleach.
  • Stage 2: This stage will be a test - we want to know your superpower!
  • Stage 3: We want you to feel part of our Bleach family so we give you the opportunity to meet with other team members and also give you the opportunity to discuss your test so in case you have any questions, we’ll be more than happy to answer.
  • Stage 4: Want to know more about the company and the culture? Let’s meet with the CEO and the Head of People & Culture.

Here’s what we think about Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging…

At Bleach London we want the diversity of our team to reflect the diversity of our customers. We pride ourselves on an inclusive work environment where everyone feels supported and respected which in turn nurtures new ideas, thinking and approaches.
