UX Design Manager - United Income
About United Income
United Income is a rapidly growing financial technology company recently acquired by Capital One that uses new technology to increase the financial potential of customers in ways that have not been possible in the past. The team has attracted over 300 media stories about the company's wealth-building innovations and thought leadership, including a Forbes article that said United Income has "an all-star team." Now, as part of Capital One, United Income's growth has accelerated and the team is rapidly expanding to support the next wave of more ambitious growth and technology innovation goals.
Our vision is clear:
Use technology to lower the cost of advice, improve its quality, and simplify its delivery so we can
help more people convert their hard work into financial mobility and security.
Our goals are simple:
Create the best financial planning and money management solution in the world;
Create a culture that is ambitious, fun, smart, and attracts and retains the best talent in each of our major areas of business;
Meaningfully and measurably improve the financial lives of aging households.
UX Design Manager Role:
United Income is looking for an experienced UXer who can help us build a great product while playing a large role in growing and scaling a super-productive and high-performing design team. You will be working closely with product, design and engineering to bring business goals to life.
If you love understanding people's problems, making daunting tasks approachable and enjoyable, and building (and testing, and refining!) user experiences that solve them and make their lives better, this is the job for you!
In this role you are going to encounter opportunities that few other UX people will have. Prototyping, testing, and refining a new company's product? Yup. Working directly with Design, Product Management and Engineering to build, test, and validate new and engaging tools? You bet. Tweaking products to improve the user experience and hit our well-defined impact metrics? That too.
Your research and testing will drive product, engineering, and design decisions. Your UX work will define interactions with our entire product and set the stage for building an entire UX team.
But let's be clear: United Income is just getting started. There is grunt work to be done. There are going to be a lot of random tasks and not everything you do will fall into the category of super-exciting. There will be heated discussions about prototypes and metrics. There will be questionable ideas to test and validate (or not!) and last-minute deadlines that we need to hustle to meet, but you will be United Income's UX.
I'll need you to come ready to work, self-start UX research to get the answers we need, and own and build the interactions that will define the future of our product.
In this role, you will:
  • Lead the development of navigation systems, labeling/taxonomy systems and searching systems to support customer goals and user needs.
  • Lead all aspects of user research deliverables, including user scenarios, workflow diagrams, usability reports and personas.
  • Guide the team as they establish a design approach based on what is possible, what will resonate with customers, and what will meet business objectives.
  • Facilitate decision-making, creating synergy between business stakeholders and development teams.
  • Prioritize and plan critical aspects of the structure, balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.
  • Estimate, plan, and lead tracks of creative work in the development of a quality solution; track progress according to the plan created for the project (e.g., conduct design reviews and creative status meetings as needed)
  • Identify tools, templates, and techniques that evolve existing approaches

The ideal candidate:
  • Considers User Experience to be more than just aesthetics;
  • Builds to meet business needs and solve both user and business problems;
  • Constantly searches for simplicity;
  • Loves constructive criticism; Is obsessed with understanding the way people "work" and think;
  • Shows a willingness to experiment with new design tools;
  • Works closely with design to build and enhance an existing brand and design pattern;
  • Never misses a chance to consider the little things that make a product delightful.

It's a huge plus if you also have:
  • Experience in the financial technology sector;
  • Design Sprint and prototyping experience;
  • Experience building user experiences for older audiences (47 to 70 years old);
  • Knowledge and experience with front-end development;
  • Information Architecture experience (IA);
  • General visual design experience so you can lend design a hand when needed;
  • Experience with Section 508 compliance.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in design-related discipline (Interaction, Information or Interface design, Human-Computer Interaction, Design Planning, Graphic Design, Communications) or Military Experience
  • At least 5 years of UX experience
  • At least one year of experience in Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD

Preferred Qualifications:
  • A clear understanding of User Roles, Personas, Journey Maps and User Testing
  • Existing knowledge of user-centered design methods and techniques
  • 2+ years of experience in Sketch, Figma, or Adobe XD
  • 2+ years of experience in Fluency in InVision for sharing, optimization, and testing
  • Interaction Design experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience selling your work and results to senior executives
  • Experience with the Scrum Agile development process

At this time, Capital One will not sponsor a new applicant for employment authorization for this position.
