  • Experience in electrical and mechanical fault finding

The ideal candidate will have construction site experience with a good knowledge of Total Station EDM’s; be an effective communicator and be computer literate in the use of AutoCAD and data processing. Any previous steelwork experience may be advantageous but is not essential. Be willing to work away from home during the week when required (Site Dependent).
Applicants should preferably have a CSCS card. A phone, laptop and equipment will be supplied along with a van for company use. Initial on-site training will be given, but individuals will be expected to work independently.

SSE Thermal Engineering & Innovation team play a significant role in the delivery of multi £billion low carbon investment programmes, and operation of over 3,000 megawatts of electricity generation capacity. We provide expertise across a wide range of engineering disciplines to ensure successful project design development, and best practice asset management across our thermal generation fleet.

What is the Role?

The Engineer is responsible for providing technical expertise in order to manage the medium to long term integrity of operational turbo-generators and deliver the requirements on such assets for new build projects.

The role will also include the management of relevant engineering and design standards and undertaking engineering reviews across the fleet to ensure the turbo-generators comply with engineering legislation and standards and provision of specialist engineering support and advice to asset operators and project teams.

Key Accountabilities:

- Responsible for the delivery of Asset Life Assessments; determining the current status of high consequence assets; and develop appropriate control measures and engineering strategies.

- Responsible for undertaking engineering design reviews for new build turbo-generators and planning and implementation of quality assurance requirements to ensure requirements are achieved during design and construction.

- Responsible for the development of engineering solutions required to mitigate integrity risk across these high consequence assets.

- Responsible for the technical review of Generation and Storage operational capital investments.

- Responsible for the provision of specialist engineering support to operational assets.

What do I need?

We are looking for someone with specialist turbo-generator knowledge gained from a background based on design, operation or maintenance.

Knowledge or practical experience on typical turbo-generator electrical testing and condition monitoring techniques is also beneficial.

You'll be a Chartered Engineer and a member of the Engineering Council or working towards this goal. Strong technical knowledge and experience of Thermal electricity generation including technical knowledge electrical power systems and their operation will be necessary for this role.

As an experienced engineer, you will have good working knowledge of appropriate engineering legislation and industry good practice along with high level of commercial awareness in order to understand implications of engineering activities and decisions.

As a person, you'll pride yourself on your excellent organisational skills and ability to deliver the highest quality of work within the agreed timescales.

Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills will be essential, as will be the ability to communicate at various managerial levels within the business and be part of an electrical engineering team.

It is an essential requirement for this role that you have a full, current driving licence.

Costain supports EDF Energy Generation to maximise the lifespan of its eight UK nuclear power stations and prepare for defuelling and decommissioning. Costain's role is to provide project controls and commercial managed services to portfolios and programmes of work across all of EDF's eight UK nuclear power stations. As part of this work Costain will develop people capability in core project control skills and provide specialist support to EDFs Central Technical Organisation to improve project performance and deliver cost efficiencies.

What will I be doing?

As a Planning Engineer you will be responsible for providing planning support to the EDF Energy Generation work portfolio. The main focus will be to work with Project Managers to develop & manage schedules to incorporate risk, change, resource requirements and cost in accordance with EDF Energy Generation Company requirements and standards. Key Responsibilities & Outcomes

  • Develop, control, monitor, analyse and report on schedule related aspects for designated projects within a Portfolio.
  • Establish and monitor a cost and resource loaded, logic linked, baseline plan for the project in accordance with Central Technical Organisation (CTO) Programme Office processes.
  • Capture project budgetary costs and resources in the plan to determine time phasing of expenditure and the total project budget.
  • Establish robust Work Breakdown and Project Control Structures in terms of project scope, in accordance with Investment Delivery processes, templates and Procedures.
  • Work with the Project Manager and the Project team to establish the project activities, cost and durations and ensure that these reflect project scope, constraints and commitments. Challenge as necessary to ensure compatibility and compliance.
  • Interface with other departments regarding the project’s activities which may have an impact and ensure these are correctly captured.
  • Facilitate acceptance of and ensure that the project plan embraces the full project work scope, is fit for purpose and is achievable. This to be done in collaboration with the Project Manager and the project’s Key Team Members / Task Managers.
  • Ensure that any necessary planning interface with the site Work Management Process (WMP) is established.
  • Maintain and control project baselines in line with company procedures and guidance.
  • Support the EDF Energy business planning process.
  • Ensure the reasons for, and the factors influencing each change to the project’s baseline plan plus the implications of such change are understood and communicated with the wider project team.
  • Liaise with project team members and contractors with regards to progress and cost forecasting.
  • Monitor, control and analyse the project programme and cost information using Earned Value methodologies, identify variances and bring these to the
  • attention of the Project Manager with possible alternatives, prepare specific reports to facilitate challenge and analysis to meet the project’s specific needs. Challenging schedule and cost variances against the baseline plan with individual task leaders/contractors and or outside stakeholder management as necessary to enable mitigation.
  • Integrate 3rd party schedules and data into the overall project plan.
  • Contribute to progress meetings, as required, in support of the Project Manager.
  • Regular interfacing and integration with the project controls team to maintain an aligned financial position with the Project Plan.

About you

Knowledge

  • Breadth of experience across whole project and programme lifecycle. (e.g. Engineering, Procurement, Construction, Installation/Commissioning processes), preferably in a highly regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Health and Safety legislation.

Skills

  • Primavera (P6) trained.
