Associate Engineering Manager&;-&;(KIN0001XL)
&;

The Guardian is one of the world’s biggest liberal news organisations. We are renowned for our groundbreaking independent journalism, our award-winning digital products and excellent engineering team.

Development of digital products is central to the Guardian. You could be building the products that showcase our progressive and independent journalism, crafting the tools that journalists use to write their stories, developing the services that allow those stories to be distributed across the globe, or safeguarding our financial future by supporting our advertising, contribution or subscription business units.

We create our award-winning website using modern JavaScript and CSS patterns, always considering progressive-enhancement, performance, scalability, browser compatibility, and user experience. We serve tens of thousands of requests per second from our services mostly written in Scala and running on AWS.

We work collaboratively with designers, user experience researchers, and other developers in the team. The majority of our code is openly available on GitHub, and some of our projects are widely used throughout the Open Source community.

The team consists of passionate, innovative developers who take pride in what they do and how they do it. If you're interested in joining the team, then get in touch and tell us how you can contribute to the future of the Guardian.

The Associate Engineering Manager role

This role is intended for senior-level software engineers with little or no experience of management, who are interested to learn how to become a good engineering manager. As an associate you will have limited responsibilities but many opportunities to grow and acquire new skills and knowledge. You will be provided management training and benefit from a mentorship scheme as well as the support from more experienced engineering managers.

You are an experienced developer with a variety of experience across domains and technologies, and you enjoy shipping great products. You have established your own areas of knowledge and expertise, but are willing to share what you know and are always eager to learn new things.

As an Associate Engineering Manager, you'll be supporting a small number of developers, usually 3, in their technical and personal development, as well as hands on helping the team deliver. You will act as their primary point of contact, providing them regular feedback and guidance.

You will need to care deeply about the developers you manage, coaching them on areas for development, celebrating their achievements and recognising their strengths.

You should be able to communicate your team’s goals and vision, and how that relates to the wider organisation. You will need to ensure that the team collaborates with stakeholders to understand what the right goals are.

You should be interested to learn more about building teams that have the right balance of product delivery and technical maintenance, and you will contribute to the team's prioritisation of work to ensure that the team stays effective.

Engineering Managers also take part in a range of activities to improve the wider department, including recruitment, mentoring and evolving our development practices.

What we offer

• Flexible working (see below for details)
• Generous pension scheme; if you contribute 5% then the Guardian will contribute 8-12% (depending on your age)
• Mental and Physical Health insurance and dental scheme
• 26 days annual leave and the option to purchase an extra 5 days
• Up to 18 weeks of parental leave at full pay
• Multi-faith prayer room
• Cycle to work scheme and subsidised gym membership
• Paid volunteering days
• Annual season ticket loan

More about flexible working

We encourage flexible working to better balance the needs of the company and employees as their circumstances change over time, and in order to attract and retain a diverse team. No two situations are identical, so please discuss with us at or before any offer stage. In order to help applicants, here are some broad guidelines of the level of flexibility we are able to give for remote working.

If you are full time and wish to work at home, expect to be required to work in the office while you get up to speed, and then at least 60% time in the office after that in order to maintain a relationship with the wider team. In the long term it may be possible to go as low as 1 day a week.

We strive for transparency in remuneration. The salary for new Associate Engineering Managers at the Guardian is £65k.

We welcome applicants with diverse backgrounds, different lived experiences and different perspectives. A diverse team means we can better reflect and engage our global audience.

We believe in hiring the best people from the widest pool, and also in including them, fostering a culture where people’s voices can be heard and our employees look forward to coming to work.

Application instructions:

To apply for this position you must already have the right to work in the UK.

Please upload your CV and covering letter as one document. You should also highlight the extent to which your skills/experience meets the requirements of the role and your motivation behind applying.

Our interview process involves three stages: a phone interview, a pairing test and a face to face interview. We offer a remote pairing test, so you will not be required to join the office.

Find out more about our hiring process here

Deadline for receipt of applications is Tuesday 2nd March 2021.

We value and respect all differences in all people (seen and unseen) at the Guardian. We aspire to inclusive working experiences and an environment that reflects the audience we serve, where our people have equal access to career development opportunities, their voices are heard and can contribute to our future. The Guardian actively encourages applications from BAME candidates.

At The Guardian, many of our staff work flexibly and we will consider all requests for flexible working arrangements.
