Job Description

Reporting to the Senior Equipment Engineering Manager you will be part of the Manufacturing Engineering Group. As a Engineering Technician you willwork closely with the Engineering Team to support the design and development of new processes technologies and products, and support manufacturing to meet customer requirements.

This position will allow you to work on new innovative technologies and processes that enable the develop of miniaturised electronic modules. These are used in high reliability and harsh environments, including Data Centre, Medical Implant and Aerospace applications.

Expectations and responsibilities in this position:

  • Setting up production equipment and processes within the manufacturing area, by correctly following process instructions in an efficient and productive manner
  • Maintain and trouble-shoot on production processes, equipment and materials.
  • Understand the process flow in your area of responsibility.
  • Support the Manufacturing Area Leader in ensuring that production schedules, plans and customer deliveries are consistently achieved. This may involve operating machines when required.
  • Support any continual improvement activities.
  • Assist in identifying and delivering training of others in the use of processes, equipment and materials.
  • Have a full understanding of company quality systems and contribute to their successful execution.
  • To support the New Product Introduction process. This involves creating new equipment programs, writing procedures, validation work books and implementing new tooling.
  • Demonstrate a flexible attitude being prepared to work in any department within the business on a variety of shift patterns where skills and business needs dictate.

Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • The minimum qualification required is a BTEC and/or NVQ level 3 in Engineering. Ideally candidates will have attained higher level apprenticeship with a HNC level qualification.
  • Several years working as a technician in a manufacturing environment.

 Competencies

  • Have working knowledge of continuous improvement tools such as 8D, 5S, Six Sigma and FMEA.
  • Have a sound knowledge and understanding equipment Process Control procedures and working practices.
  • Be PC literate in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Powerpoint and Word with the ability to produce reports using these tools.
  • Work as part of a cross functional team
  • Have effective communications skills
  • Able to prioritise and organise their own work to deliver to agreed deadlines

The ISO 9001:2015 registered Clinical Engineering department delivers medical equipment management services throughout the University Health Board.
The department provides a broad range of complex, routine and non-routine activities including servicing, repair, calibration, safety testing, quality assurance, evaluation, commissioning, decommissioning, planned preventive maintenance of medical devices.
The post holder will be expected to assist other technologists in the daily activities listed above and be able to work with and without supervision,problem solving on a wide range of equipment which includes CPAP's, Medical Gas devices,patient monitoring, infusion devices, baby incubators etc which at times will be patient connected.
We are seeking an electronics technician / engineer to join our team, previous medical electronics experience is not essential but would be an advantage.
An OND/HNC/HND or BSc qualification in electrical and electronic engineering or equivalent is an essential requirement for this post with a good understanding of analogue and digital electronics.
This is an exciting opportunity for individuals with existing electronics experience to learn the varied field of medical technologies implemented in the healthcare environment while providing a quality service for the benefit of patients.

The NHS in Wales is offering salaried post-graduate training programmes for high calibre science graduates who are passionate about science and its role in patient care across a number of specialisms and locations throughout Wales. This advert is for the Medical Physics (Radiotherapy Physics) Specialism.

Applications are invited for five Medical Physics (Radiotherapy Physics) training posts. One post will be based in South-west Wales at Singleton Hospital in Swansea, and 4 posts based in South-east Wales at Velindre Hospital in Cardiff. Please indicate your preference on the application

The training scheme in Medical Physics will follow the three year post-graduate MSc Clinical Scientist Training Programme (STP). Further details are available from:

Prior to undertaking their specialism, trainees will initially rotate through each of the Medical Physics areas: Imaging with Ionising radiation, Imaging with Non-Ionising radiation, Radiotherapy and Radiation Safety. Mobility between training centres is expected, to cover all rotations. Trainees will also undertake a fully-funded part-time accredited MSc degree in Clinical Science, at Swansea University. Successful candidates will be employed at either Swansea Bay University Health Board, or Velindre University NHS Trust for the duration of their training.

The Swansea based trainees will be located at Singleton Hospital on the coast, adjacent to Swansea University. The Health Board covers a population of approximately 0.5 million people and also provides tertiary services including cancer across southwest Wales for close to a population of 1 million. The Health Board provides a full range of services across Singleton and Morriston Hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Hospital. The Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering is mostly based in the Singleton Hospital and operates across the Health Board and beyond, employing about 120 scientists, engineers and technicians. This is a particularly exciting time to train at Swansea with successful candidates contributing to the modernisation under way in Radiotherapy. The department has very strong links with the university with an active established research collaboration. The Cardiff based trainees will undertake training placements at the University Hospital of Wales and Velindre Cancer Centre. Velindre NHS Trust provides cancer and blood services across South and Mid Wales through Velindre Cancer Centre and the Welsh Blood Service. Velindre Cancer Centre specialises in the non-surgical treatment of cancer. It serves the 1.5 million people who live in South East Wales, providing these services at its site in Whitchurch, Cardiff. Each year over 5,000 new cancer referrals are received for treatment, with over 4,000 of these receiving a course of radiotherapy. The Medical Physics Department currently employs over 50 scientific, technical and engineering staff and provides a wide range of Radiotherapy Physics and Radiation Protection services to support and develop the facilities and services of Velindre in its role as a specialist provider in Wales.

The Cardiff and Vale University Health Board provides a wide and unique range of services to the local population and wider-Wales. The University Health Board is a centre of excellence for many disciplines, and employs some of the best clinicians in their field. The Health Board covers 7 hospital sites, including the University Hospital of Wales, University Hospital, Llandough and the Children’s Hospital for Wales. Medical Physics is based at the University Hospital of Wales, and provides clinical and scientific services and support across multiple patient sectors within the Heath Board and surrounding region, including: nuclear medicine, radiopharmacy, vascular ultrasound, bone densitometry, laser surgery and ultraviolet therapy.

Velindre and Cardiff and Vale both enjoy strong teaching and research links with Cardiff University, including specialist units such as the PET Imaging Centre (PETIC) and the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC).

On completion of training, prospects for permanent employment within Wales are excellent. For individuals with aptitude and commitment there are opportunities to progress through the career pathway to Consultant Clinical Scientist. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are motivated to pursue their career in Medical Physics within Wales. This HEIW fully funded programme is equivalent to that of the STP programme in England.

The department has a high level of commitment to staff development. Opportunities to study for a prescribing course, Advance clinical Practice MSc and to develop a teaching role supervising and training junior and pre-registration pharmacists, technicians and assistants as well providing training and education for medical and nursing staff may be considered for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will be based in South-west Wales at the Singleton Hospital in Swansea and employed by Swansea Bay University Health Board for the duration of their training. There will also be some travel expected in order to attend other training centres, sites at which services are provided or workshops.

You will be located at the Singleton Hospital on the coast, adjacent to Swansea University. The Health Board covers a population of approximately 0.5 million people and also provides tertiary services including cancer across southwest Wales for close to a population of 1 million. The Health Board provides a full range of services across Singleton and Morriston Hospitals in Swansea and Neath Port Talbot Hospital. The Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering is mostly based in the Singleton Hospital and operates across the Health Board and beyond, employing about 120 scientists, engineers and technicians. This is a particularly exciting time to train at Swansea with the successful candidate contributing to the modernisation under way in Radiotherapy. The department has very strong links with the university with an active established research collaboration. On completion of training, prospects for permanent employment within Wales are excellent. For individuals with aptitude and commitment there are opportunities to progress through the career pathway to Consultant Clinical Scientist. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing test equipment at site level and ensuring the integrity of the Qualcomm global Test Equipment Asset database for assets under their remit, including managing test equipment calibration and repairs. In addition to this you will be responsible for providing Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) guidance and support at site level, plus conducting periodic audits. You will operate autonomously with limited supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Test equipment responsibilities
+ Responsible for management and integrity of Asset Management database (Asset Manager). Conduct periodic audits to validate test equipment inventory locations.
+ Responsible for ensuring that all Qualcomm test equipment is calibrated and maintained to applicable international standards. Calibration to be managed in a timely manner with minimal downtime for engineers. Ensure calibration records are stored appropriately.
+ Plan and execute calibration activities, such as large on-site calibration events, e.g. VOSCAL with approx. 800 items being calibrated over the course of 5 weeks, and ad hoc calibration of individual items throughout the year.
+ Manage repairs of test equipment assets to ensure most cost effective and timely repairs are completed.
+ Optimise utilisation of test equipment within Cambridge site. Maintain test equipment ‘library’ and encourage re-use of assets.
+ Manage disposal of unwanted/obsolete test equipment assets whilst ensuring that Qualcomm remains compliant with applicable country environmental laws. Where possible re-sell test equipment via appropriate third parties; liaise with Purchasing team to negotiate best possible prices. Liaise with Finance to ensure fixed asset register updated appropriately.
+ Manage the movement of test and measurement assets into, within, and out of Qualcomm. Arrange export of equipment to Qualcomm sites for demos/customer testing as required (Export Control Awareness)
ESD responsibilities:
+ Maintain ESD plans for all areas and conduct scheduled ESD audits; liaise with Facilities/Lab Managers to address any findings.
+ Coordinate provision of ESD related items and manage relationship with primary external provider.
+ Manage weekly laundry schedule for ESD jackets.
+ Contact point for local ESD support and guidance.
As a member of the site Internal Audit team:
+ Perform internal audits in accordance with Annual Audit Schedule, as allocated via Internal Audit Team meeting. Support customer / supplier / ISO 9001 audits on an ‘as needs’ basis.

    • Zero OHS/WHS incidents at all sites under management. For new sites ensure that an initial OHS/WHS inspection and ensure a rigorous OH&S system is in place.
  • People Management
    • One on One meetings with all direct reports on weekly basis
    • All meetings documented and actions addressed
    • Provide training for all operational staff – ensure that all staff comply with the frequency of inspection visits and follow up to ensure that service delivery levels are as per our contractual requirements.
    • Ensure that Area Managers report weekly to the National Operations Manager regarding all sites visited, audit scores and other general issues. Ensure plans are put in place to address any issues.
    • Ensure that Area Managers develop and sustain a strong relationship with all Woolworths Field Service Coordinators and Area Mangers in their sites and all other non-Woolworths clients.
