Location:
St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London
Salary:
£28,243 - £49,036

An opportunity has arisen to join the Gastroenterology and Hepatology team at St. George’s Hospital (London, UK) as a Clinical Research Fellow in hepatology. The post provides excellent clinical exposure to hepatology, general gastroenterology, GI bleeds and advanced endoscopy. The appointed candidate will work within a team, supported by Foundation Year and Intermediate Medical Trainees.

The intended outcome for the successful candidate will be to obtain an MD research degree, with the aim of applying competitively for external grant funding to support this, as well as considerable sub-speciality clinical and endoscopic expertise.

Research: Decompensated Cirrhosis

The prevalence of liver disease in the United Kingdom is increasing rapidly, primarily due to alcohol-related liver disease (ArLD) and metabolic-dysfunction associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Chronic liver injury from such insults leads to liver fibrosis and can progress to cirrhosis. Patients with cirrhosis are susceptible to infection, occurring four times more common compared with the general healthy population, associated with an increased risk of organ failure and mortality.

This research project will be centred on investigating immunopathology and susceptibility to infection in patients with acute decompensated cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). The project may include evaluating biomarkers to predict outcome, innate immune function in the circulation and organ compartments (e.g., peritoneal cavity) and mechanisms of microbial translocation in contributing to septic and portal hypertensive complications in this cohort of patients.

As part of the project, the candidate will be involved in patient screening, recruitment and biological sampling. They will learn basic lab-based immunological techniques to generate novel data with no prior lab experience necessary. The aim would be to generate preliminary results sufficient to apply for external grant funding. There may also be opportunity to collaborate with other London tertiary liver centres. If the candidate has specific research interests within the area of complications of cirrhosis, the project can be negotiated.

The successful candidate will be expected to register for an MD higher research degree with St. George’s University of London (SGUL) and will be supervised by Dr Arjuna Singanayagam (Senior Lecturer in Hepatology and Honorary Consultant Hepatologist) with co-supervision from Dr Daniel Forton (Reader in Hepatology and Consultant Hepatologist). Naturally, the candidate must be inquisitive, keen to learn, resourceful and determined.

There will be opportunities to participate in existing hepatology clinical research trials including a weekly hepatology research clinic supervised by Dr Daniel Forton.
