Summary

An Operations Manager at Metal Sales is an active member of the branch leadership team.  Reporting to the General Manager, this position is expected to plan, direct, and coordinate the daily operations of the facility to ensure quality product and timely delivery to customers.  This position is responsible for executing Lean manufacturing principles, safety and compliance, production planning and budgeting, inventory control processes, administrative processes (including HR functions), and financial processing and review.  The result of these efforts contributes to the overall success of our Sellersburg, IN branch.

You’ll be responsible for (but not limited to):

  • Assisting with the creation and implementation of strategic and tactical objectives as necessary for the branch to reach goals
  • Maintaining a safe working environment as well as training, safely working employees through constant monitoring of unsafe conditions and behaviors
  • Training and executing Lean manufacturing principles on the production floor including Kaizen events, 5S, Value Stream Mapping, TPM, and SMED
  • Recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training staff; including developing direct reports and establishing career progression opportunities within the department
  • Advising subordinate production supervisors on labor issues including safety, security, employee relations, scheduling, and training; ensuring supervisors are adhering to company policy and administering practices in a fair and equitable manner
  • Striving to create an Employer of Choice atmosphere by continuously communicating, resolving issues, and developing incentives and retention strategies
  • Functioning as branch HR representative, working closely with Corporate HR staff to ensure proper processing of all employment and payroll related activities as well as implementation and communication of HR policies and procedures such as new hire orientation and timecard approvals
  • Establishing realistic and challenging production rates and communicating to operators; operating within the AS400 system to complete all daily and monthly production reporting
  • Conducting daily review of open orders, invoicing, margin reports, and stock status to verify accurate, timely processing of customer orders; researching and correcting errors related to these items
  • Maintaining and ensuring a routine preventive maintenance plan for all equipment
  • Researching and resolving customer complaints related to all aspects of service including order accuracy, material quality, damages, late or incomplete delivery
  • Creating production shifts that optimally utilize labor and capacity; responding to seasonality issues by adjusting labor accordingly
  • Monitoring daily production performance in relation to company established KPIs and reporting results to production personnel via visual boards
  • Identifying opportunities to improve expense control, sales, productivity, and product quality and making recommendations to General Manager
  • Reviewing methods, processes, cost, labor, and machine utilization and recommending more efficient and economical methods and techniques
  • Overseeing Inventory Control personnel, processes and procedures to include inventory on hand, aged material, operational scrap, inventory receipt, payment and invoicing of all goods sold and purchased

Job Requirements

The most qualified candidates will have:

  • At least 5 years of manufacturing management experience in a high output, multi-shift environment
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business or Engineering
  • Building products industry experience strongly preferred
  • Lean manufacturing exposure; Lean certification strongly preferred
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and employment law
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office; AS400 and/or NetSuite ERP experience beneficial
