UK Biobank have an exciting opportunity for a Bioinformatician to join their team.

Location: Cheadle, with regular travel

Salary: £35,000 to £42,000 per annum

Owing to the increasing volume and complexity of data contained within the UK Biobank study, the ongoing work to generate whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing for our large cohort, and recent development of our own Research Access Platform, we are now recruiting for a Bioinformatician to join the Data Analyst team based at the Cheadle site.

Bioinformatician - About Us:

UK Biobank is one of the world's leading biomedical data resources, based on a large prospective cohort study of 500,000 individuals from across the United Kingdom recruited between 2006 and 2010. A rich variety of genetic, biochemical, lifestyle and health-related information is available on each participant, making the resource unprecedented in its size and scope.

Enrichment of the resource continues, through questionnaires, physical measures, physical activity monitors, multimodal imaging, metabolomics and proteomic assay, whole exome and genome sequencing and the return of findings from research undertaken on the resource. At recruitment, all participants provided consent for follow-up of their health through linkage to their health-related records.

These de-identified data - the largest and richest dataset of its kind - have been made accessible to many thousands of researchers around the world who are applying their expertise and imagination to make scientific discoveries that will improve human health.

The UK Biobank resource is available to researchers worldwide from the academic, commercial, charity and public sectors - without preferential access - for all types of health-related research. Since access to UK Biobank opened in 2012, over 2,000 applications have been made to use the resource from 17,000 registered researchers, resulting in 1,500 scientific papers to date. There is growing interest from the commercial sector to invest in UK Biobank to perform cohort-wide assays.

Bioinformatician - The Role:

UK Biobank is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced individual to provide bioinformatic development and support for ongoing large-scale sequencing and imaging projects. The main responsibilities will involve processing and analysing sequencing data and development of bioinformatics pipelines for research use, including:

- Development of additional quality control procedures for whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing data

- Incorporation of existing algorithms for data processing into the UK Biobank Research Access Platform

- Development of procedures to derive phenotypic measures from MR and DXA imaging

The role will be based at the UK Biobank Coordinating Centre in Cheadle, although regular liaison with UK Biobank staff at the Big Data Institute (at the University of Oxford) will be required. It is expected the post-holder will significantly work from home during the current pandemic, with availability of flexible working thereafter.

You will work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of programmers, statisticians, epidemiologists, data analysts, research and administrative staff and will report to UK Biobank's Senior Data Analyst based in Cheadle.

This is an exciting opportunity to interrogate and resolve issues and challenges associated with generating sequencing and imaging at a previously unprecedented scale, and highly complex real-world data sets and applications

- Significant experience in analysis of large-scale sequencing data, including complex multistage pipeline development, reporting, and troubleshooting

Description

- PhD in bioinformatics or related field, or equivalent experience

- Significant experience in analysis of large-scale sequencing data, including complex multistage pipeline development, reporting, and troubleshooting

- Proficiency in programming, e.g. Python/C++/R, and familiarity with containerisation (e.g. Docker), command line applications, and programming standards such as version control

- Excellent problem solving and analytical skills, and ability to prepare and maintain detailed documentation

- Highly motivated with excellent attention to detail, able to work on own initiative and as part of a multi-disciplinary team

- Proficiency in using relational databases and writing SQL queries

- Experience of machine learning (ML) approaches for data analysis

- Understanding of the application of statistical methods to epidemiological studies

- Understanding and/or experience of complex datasets, including integration of health records or phenotypic data
