Steward (TSVRON-20-1884-W):
Bowhead seeks a Steward who will support the Carrier Strike Group Four, Training Support which is responsible for coordinating, establishing, and implementing integrated requirements and policies for manning, equipping, and training fleet units, strike groups (SG), and strike forces (SF). These requirements and elements are paramount in the execution of the Fleet Response Plan (FRP), in support of and as required by U.S. Navy policy and combatant commanders.
The Steward will support underway days for a range support vessel working for the U. S. Navy on the Atlantic seaboard. These training support vessels range in size between 150'-250' and are homeported in Hampton Roads, VA.
Essential Functions include but are not limited to:
• Assist the Head of the Steward’s department in preparing and serving meals, cleanliness and other housekeeping chores.
• The Steward reports to the Head of the Steward’s department. Work hours are directed by the Head of the Steward’s Department.
• Ensure clean crockery and availability of crockery to the crew.
• Remove garbage from galley/messing area.
• Break out menu items as directed by the steward cook.

Requirements

• Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

• Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: There are currently no Security Clearance requirements for this position; however, candidates must be able to successfully pass a background check. This is a flexible position meaning that drivers will be shifted to where demand for the trucks is. Stewards VISTA: Groundwork Mobile County

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (SIPP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. For this position, SIPP is in partnership with the United States Forest Service Southern Region Volunteers & Service Programs Center of Excellence (COE), a pilot program to increase Forest Service capacity by engaging diverse populations in volunteer opportunities, and further supporting workforce development service programs in conservation careers. VISTA positions would allow for safe, productive, and sustainable partnerships and volunteer programs across the Forests by directly increasing capacity on the ground. VISTAs will foster buy-in and further develop a culture of community engagement and shared stewardship with partners and communities. VISTAs will be strategically positioned on high-opportunity Districts to leverage partnership opportunities and effectively support and expand funding opportunities. The COE anticipates revenue benefits to local rural communities from increases in forest visitation from ecotourism and voluntourism activities. The VISTA Corps member will assist with recruiting a diverse and representative group of volunteers and supporting integrative projects for all resource areas in their assigned national forests throughout the Southern Region. Volunteers & Service Programs Coordinators VISTA positions will be mentored by the Sub-Regional Volunteers & Service Programs Specialists and will become integral members of Region 8’s established Volunteers & Service Programs Community of Practice. Upon the completion of each VISTA project year, Districts and Forests can expect an increase of funds for projects, a solid volunteer management philosophy, a community engagement plan focused on increasing project partnerships, and a long-term, sustainability plan to carry the program beyond the VISTA project term.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Support local economic and community development by providing workforce development opportunities and supporting sustainable recreation and tourism related to the national forest
  • Build capacity and create a legacy of long-term improvement and sustainability in the communities they serve by identifying fiscal support and community resources
  • Develop forest staff relationships to secure projects that will compete well for internal funding opportunities and external grant proposals
  • Providesupport and generate organizational interest through the engagement of community-based volunteers
  • Create the framework for a sustainable volunteers and service program
  • Engage the community they serve to ensure awareness of organizational efforts and generate community commitment to impact-driven activities being performed
  • Support recruitment and management to ensure diverse, equitable, and inclusive practices are employed when engaging members of the public.

Position Details:

Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. SIP, in partnership with the United States Forest Service, is seeking Wilderness & Trails Stewards who will help clear and maintain trails within the Paonia Ranger District, as well as support larger projects.

The hope is to clear 50 miles of trail and perform deferred maintenance on 5 miles of trail over the course of the service term. Further, the Stewards will assist in helping inventory and manage dispersed recreation sites, which will protect the resource from further degradation and provide a more positive visitor experience. They will also perform regular maintenance of developed recreation sites including trailhead signage, campground facilities, and outdoor toilets.

The Stewards will be expected to work as an independent team, sometimes with the support of the program lead. They will be expected to be able to hike 1-15 miles per day in mountainous terrain while performing trail maintenance duties and carrying a loaded backpack. The Stewards will also be expected to be proficient in backcountry travel and low impact camping techniques. They will assist in the use of pack and saddle stock and will be trained in ATV operation, pack and saddle stock use, crosscut saw use, S-212 chainsaw use, and large vehicle/trailer operation. They will get to live in the small town of Paonia and work in the surrounding mountains including the West Elk Mountains and Raggeds Mountains.

Lastly, Stewards will have exposure to many facets of USFS management and the opportunity to work with other resources such as timber, range, wildlife, and fire. Previous members have used this experience as a gateway into a career with the USFS and other agencies. It will be a rigorous yet very rewarding experience.

Position Responsibilities will include:

  • Perform trail corridor maintenance in wilderness and non-wilderness settings.
  • Assist in volunteer leadership and management.
  • Inventory, management, and improvement of dispersed recreation sites.
  • Assist the timber, range, and fire resources when needed.
  • Restore downed and broken trail signs.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be a US Citizen, National or legal resident
  • It is essential for the Stewards to be able to drive
  • Ability to hike up to 10 miles/day with a 60-pound pack
  • Ability to camp up to 8 days in backcountry settings
  • Ability to work with little to no direct supervision
  • Willingness to live and work in a small, rural community and be a responsible and respectable member of that community
  • Willingness to work outdoors in areas containing natural hazards including biting and stinging insects, poisonous plants, inclement weather, and rugged terrain
  • Willingness and capability to camp 1-4 nights per week, potentially in consistently inclement weather
  • The selected Stewards will be required to submit a midterm and a final report during their term of service

  • Bachelor's degree or in pursuit of bachelor’s degree
  • Experience with backcountry travel and camping for extended periods
